Sure it looks like a business card on first sight, but a closer look will tell you otherwise. This is not a business card. This is what I call a person card or personality card.

The concept of business cards presuppose that you are your job, whether it’s General Manager or General Messenger. It doesn’t allow for the wider range of expression that we now are not only capable of, but actively express on a daily basis, often anywhere and anywhen.

Before the age of social media and blogs, our jobs defined us. Then came the internet and social media, giving us a an infinite range of ways with which to express ourselves and what we love. Our social interactions have since jumped out of the professional box and span that whole infinite vista of activities that we engage in on a daily basis You might crunch numbers by day at KPMG, but how does that take precedence over that side of your persona that likes to take beautiful pictures over the weekend? You are a Banker, but in your free time, you enjoy pinning up interior decor photos on pinterest. And I know a lot of people who tweet about all kinds of non-work stuff, while they’re at work, without any apparent consequences on their productivity.

Today’s world is one in which the average person can be and usually is many things, and if you’re like me who detests the “so what do you do?” question when you meet people, a conventional business card simply does not capture who you are.

Take for instance –  you are in a meetup with all kinds of enthusiasts just like yourself, and you get talking. The way by which we show that we want to maintain a further connection is by exchanging our business cards, right? The trouble for me however is that these cards tell a single story about you, they only give the other person a professional picture, which is not the sum of what I do. So I thought to myself –  why not have something that is more fluid, that will work in most situations, that tells, or at the very least, leads them to a more complete story about me?

Which is why I came up with this. Maybe it’s the strikingly minimal design. Maybe it’s the bold declaration on the front. Maybe it’s the unconventional narrative. Or it could be the funky QR code that takes you to my about page when you scan it with your mobile device. Whichever it is, my person cards draw its recipient in without fail, every single time. I think it’s because they’ve likely never seen anything quite like it.

The 2012 edition of Mobile Web West Africa goes down on the 25th and 26th of this month, and yours truly will be there.

Mobile Web West Africa is a part of a series of mobile technology events that is focused on bringing  to the fore, the massive opportunity that the internet and applications on mobile devices represent to all the different echelons of society. A premium event that is also organised in Western and Southern Africa, it aims to facilitate and enable the expansion and growth of the mobile ecosystem in Africa.

Apart from generally participating in the proceedings, I’ll also be covering the event, so stay with me for live updates, pictures, sound bites, reviews, close-ups with industry players and much much more. In the last four years, MTN has brought brought the likes of Les Brown, Chris Gardner and David Plouffe to speak to Nigerians on entrepreneurship, strategy, motivation and more. This year, Farrah Grey, millionaire by age 14, will be the main feature of the MTN 2012 leadership seminar.

MTN will also be launching an entrepreneur fund, called the MTN Budding Entrepreneur Business Grant. The grant will be awarded to three business ideas that will be chosen via a selection process, and is worth 25million and 5million for the best and two next best ideas respectively.

Here’s what a Google BBS terminal would have looked like in the 1980s when BBS terminals were “in”. I found this gem on BI, and I just had to post it up. Before the internet, people used BBS terminals to connect. What I really like is the whirring and clicking dial tone when the BBS service is loading, how’s that for retro?

In the interview, Tayo makes great points about business and entrepreneurship, the state of Nigeria’s human resource pool, startup funding in Nigeria, as well as the Nigerian investor’s disposition to the concept of startups. At the moment, most of Nigeria’s young entrepreneurial energy is concentrated in technology, I couldn’t agree more with Ndani’s choice for the show’s first run.
